Savvy BOB Box
In early 2012, Rimrose Ringers were contacted by Steve Burrowes from Savio High School with an offer of thirty BOB (Bird or Bat) nestboxes for use on Rimrose. The BOB project is based on a bird nestbox that incorporates access for bats on the underside, an innovation that gained Savio recognition as it won the Observer Ethical Award for Kids in 2011.
The BOB boxes are made by students during their lunchtimes and after-school as part of the school's suite of extra-curricular activities. The boxes have already proved to be a huge success, as well as receiving national accodlades, the students have managed to build over 1,000 boxes with many boxes being installed at the nearby Knowsley Safari Park.
Boxes are available for £9.99 of which £2 is donated to the Bat Conservation Trust. Boxes are not currently available online, but are available directly from Steve at Savio by calling the School Office on 0151 521 3088.
In early March, Rimrose Ringers received the delivery of boxes from Savio and promptly installed them at three key locations on Rimrose Valley. Five boxes were put within Brook Vale LNR, six boxes in woodland at Fulwood Marsh and nineteen boxes in the fringe woodland of the canal towpath, speciffically for roosting bats. These boxes will be checked regularly over the coming months, with any nestlings being ringed and the bat boxes being monitored, under licence, by members of the Bat Conservation Trust.
We are currently looking for funding to expand the project in 2013, with a target of 120 boxes to be put in place through the whole of the Country Park. If you can help, please contact us here.
